Diving Malapascua and Gato Island

Explore the deeps at Monad Shoal and Gato Island and encounter a wide array of undersea organisms.

Blogger, dive enthusiast, and underwater imager Jayvee Fernandez shows us what to expect from the dive sites of Malapascua Island and Gato Island in Cebu.

Known for Monad Shoal and the thresher sharks just waiting to be cleaned, the island of Malapascua is fast becoming the flagship dive destination of Cebu. The island is host to several dive sites that will keep you occupied for an entire week. There's diving round the clock beginning at 5AM, when divers hit the water and descend to Monad Shoal, a cleaning station where thresher sharks make their way for a morning pitstop. Afterwards, there are full day dives to admire Cebu's finest macro life-pygmy seahorses, shrimps, and crabs, as well as a cave dive in Gato Island where white tip sharks rest in darkness. Just before the evening sets, divers can catch a glimpse of a Mandarin Fish spawning site known locally as the "red light" district.
