Planning for a trip isn't always possible, especially when you're itching to leave right then and there. When the most planning you want to do for a trip is to decide to get up and go, there are a few things you must remember so that you can prevent yourself from getting into sticky situations. Here are a few tips for spontaneous travelers:

  1. Bring a small travel emergency kit with you, or hit a convenience store before you leave. In case your chosen place of accommodation doesn't have a toiletry set in the room, have a small toiletry kit with a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, and toilet paper with you. You may also want to buy a variety of snacks for the road (and maybe for your stay) so you don't have to spend as much on food when you get to your destination. Also remember to bring any personal medication you may need.
  2. Take a look at how much money you have with you and work within that budget. It's important to work with what you have, lest you find yourself unable to return home due to lack of funds. Enjoy yourself, but keep track of how much you're spending and how much you'll need to go home.
  3. Make sure you have spare cash and an ATM or credit card on hand. Having emergency cash stashed in your wallet or an alternative way to pay for unexpected expenses can be very handy. Try not to touch this amount of money or your cards unless absolutely necessary.
  4. Know more or less what you want to do when you get to your destination, so that you can make the most of your vacation time. Even if you're being completely spontaneous, there's no doubt that you had some kind of activity in mind when you decided to travel. Keep that idea in mind, and you won't feel like you're wandering aimlessly during your trip.
  5. Be creative. Since you didn't make any reservations prior to your trip, you may have to come up with creative ways to have a good vacation. You may need a back-up plan when it comes to what you'll be doing and where you'll be staying. Think of new ways to do things or new places to go, and even if problems may arise, you may find new and exciting ways to overcome them.
  6. Ask locals for directions and recommendations. If there are new places you want to visit, or if you have never been to that destination before, don't be afraid to approach friendly locals who can point you in the right direction. You can check out maps (both printed maps and online maps) but those can only take you so far-the people who live in the area can give you a more accurate idea of how far your next destination is and suggest ways to get there. Aside from asking them about how to get to different places, you can ask them what attractions they recommend that you visit, which can be very helpful when you're deciding what you want to do next.
  7. Be flexible. Part of the excitement of impromptu travel is not knowing every detail of your trip beforehand. Keep an open mind, especially when it comes to your accommodations and activities, and you will be able to enjoy your spur-of-the-moment holiday.
