Batangas is a first class province and one of the favorite vacation destinations of the people living in the metropolis. If you are looking for a place where you can have a quick out-of-town vacation, Batangas is just a 1-2 hour drive from Manila. Here you will find some of the friendliest (and most courageous) people in the country. They have some of the most beautiful beaches and one of the most incredible volcanoes you will ever see.

When in Batangas, you shouldn't miss the Taal Volcano. It is found near the middle of the Taal Lake. The area is famous for the enjoyable boat ride to the volcano island where you will be enthralled by scenic views of mountains and the deep blue waters.  The volcano island is popular for its mysterious crater lake.

One of the reasons why tourists from Metro Manila flock to Batangas is its gorgeous beaches—some of the best are found in Calatagan. Anybody will fall in love with its silky sands and striking turquoise waters that are perfect for swimming, boating, and snorkeling. Resorts, hotels, and other establishments fringe the shoreline.

Peppered with dive spots, Anilao, meanwhile, is the perfect place for underwater aficionados. Said to be the birthplace of scuba diving in the country, Anilao is a haven for divers and snorkelers. Its corals are inhabited by numerous schools of colorful fish and other amazing sea creatures. Even inexperienced divers are welcome since dive resorts that offer scuba gear and diving lessons are available in the town.

By Land
The province of Batangas is composed of 31 municipalities and three cities so your mode of land travel and the travel time will depend on your end point.

Before, Batangas was two and a half hours away from the metro, but with the opening of the Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR) Tollway in 2007, land travel should only take about an hour to an hour and half. Private car owners won’t have a problem navigating the road as there are markers along the expressway that will direct you to various points in Batangas.

Commuting to Batangas isn’t a problem either. There are quite a number of bus companies that offer Manila to Batangas trips. Most of these bus companies have terminals in major parts of the metro like Pasay, Manila, and Quezon City. Some of the reputable bus lines to consider when going to Batangas include ALPS The Bus, JAM Transit, JAC Liner, Batangas Starexpress, and RRCG Bus just to name a few.

By Sea
The Batangas Pier is also the jumping-off point to various places in the Philippines like Puerto Galera, Mindoro, Cebu, Roxas City, and even Caticlan. If you’re coming from these places, you can take a boat to Batangas.

How to Get Around
Once you reach your destination in Batangas, going around town is made more convenient with the presence of passenger jeeps and tricycles. Taxis are very rare in Batangas, if not totally unavailable.

What to See
Landmarks
Batangas is one of the more popular holiday destinations for those who wish to take a break from the hustle and bustle of Metro Manila, especially since it is just a couple of hours away by car. This province south of the metro is home to a number of ancient structures that speak of Batangas’ rich history and culture.

Casa de Segunda, found in the provincial capital city of Lipa, is an interesting landmark in the province. The heritage house was the home of Don Manuel Mitra de San Miguel-Luz and Doña Segunda Katigbak, said to be the first love of the country’s national hero Dr. Jose Rizal. Built in 1860 in typical Spanish architecture, this bahay na bato has undergone several repairs throughout the years and is now converted into a museum and managed by Doña Katigbak’s present heirs.

In the town of Tanauan is another landmark that was built to mark the birthplace of Apolinario Mabini, one of the prominent figures in Philippine history. The Apolinario Mabini Shrine is another historic attraction visited by tourists in Batangas. A bust of Mabini, flanked by two pylons, greets visitors to the shrine. After you pass through the entrance, you can either visit the library to the left or the museum to the right which houses some of Mabini’s belongings and memorabilia. Mabini’s tomb is also found in the middle of the shrine.

The Taal Heritage Village, located in Taal, Batangas, also boasts quite a number of historic landmarks that will take you back to the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. The Goco Ancestral House reminds visitors of how affluent some Filipinos who lived back in the day were. The Caysasay Church, on the other hand, is one of the well-preserved places of worship found in the heritage village. Built in 1639, the church was once called the “poor man’s church,” but now has been established as the home of Our Lady of Caysasay, an important image of the Virgin Mary in the province. Meanwhile, photographers will be delighted with the extensive collection of vintage cameras and rare photographs at Galleria Taal, housed in an ancestral home that was built during the 1800s.

There are still quite a number of attractions found in the heritage town of Taal but none as grand as the Basilica of Saint Martin of Tours. Also known as the Taal Basilica, it features a grand Baroque structure and has a dimension of 96 meters long and 45 meters wide, making it the biggest church in all of Southeast Asia.

Natural and Man-Made Attractions
The natural attractions that Batangas has been blessed with continue to lure visitors all over the country for some R&R. For starters, Batangas has quite a few coastal towns that will allow you to enjoy the sun, sand, and sea.

Calatagan is a favorite destination given its near white sand beaches and fascinating location between the South China Sea and the Balayan Bay. Calatagan is home to Lago de Oro, a resort and wakeboard park that is perfect for thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies. The century-old Cape Santiago Lighthouse is an interesting landmark worth checking out when in Calatagan.

If wakeboarders go to Calatagan, skimboarders will surely find their sanctuary in Nasugbu. Located in the northwest Batangas, Nasugbu is home to some of Batangas’ top beaches like Natipuan and Tali. Nasugbu is also home to Mount Pico de Loro, Mount Batulao, and Mount Talamitam, all of which are visited yearly by numerous mountain climbers and hikers.

The town of San Juan is also known for its spectacular beaches, particularly the ones found in Laiya. Aside from Calatagan, Laiya is one of the favorite beach destinations of city dwellers in Metro Manila. This coastal barangay also has a strip of resorts and hotels, so beach bums and watersports enthusiasts won’t have a hard time looking for a place to stay while there.

For divers, however, the top choice in Batangas will have to be Anilao in the town of Mabini. It boasts stunning marine life with fascinating corals and diverse schools of fish. Anilao is said to be the birthplace of scuba diving in the Philippines and has, over the years, continued to draw in a significant number of divers, both local and foreign.

But perhaps Batangas’ most famous natural attraction is the Taal Volcano. Though classified as the country’s second most active volcano, there are trips to the actual volcano where you can even hike to the crater. Tourists who have gone on a hike can attest that the view from the crater is nothing compared to viewing the volcano from afar—it is simply stunning and truly breathtaking.

Car enthusiasts and motorsports fans will surely delight in visiting the Batangas Racing Circuit in Rosario, Batangas. The 3.7-kilometer circuit has hosted quite a number of races such as Formula Toyota, Circuit Showdown, and the Philippine Superbike Championship. The circuit has a number of events lined up yearly, which are all posted on their company’s official website. Fantasy World in Lemery, on the other hand, would have been the Philippine version of Disneyland if its development had pushed through. To date, however, this entertainment facility is still open to visitors for picnics and pictorials with the medieval structures of the facility in the background.

Events and Festivals
The annual Ala Eh! Festival is when the municipalities and cities of Batangas come together to unite as one province to celebrate its centuries-old history, traditions, and culture. The festival is held every December and is the best time to see the towns and the cities as they come alive with colorful decorations, street parties, and various festivities.

Where to Eat
Restaurants and Fast Food Chains
Johanna’s Grill in Batangas City, Lomi King in Lipa City, Taal Bistro in Taal, Kainan sa Dalampasigan in Nasugbu, and Florenel Café and Restaurant in Cuenca are just some of the highly recommended places to eat at in Batangas. Of course, fast food chains like Greenwich, Chowking, Jollibee, and McDonald’s are also available in different parts of the city.

What to Eat
When it comes to local delicacies, Batangas has offerings that will keep you coming back for more. Tawilis, or freshwater sardines, is a kind of fish that is only found in Batangas. It which can be cooked and enjoyed in a number of ways: grilled, fried, or boiled ala-pinais or kinamatisanAdobo sa Dilaw is another Batangas delicacy that you should try. This type of adobo is cooked just like any normal adobo, but turmeric is added to give it that extra flavor and bright yellow color.

Your Batangas journey is not complete without indulging in a steaming bowl of loming Batangas. This savory dish made from egg noodles in a rich broth, topped with vegetables, squid balls, pork, and liver. Gotong Batangas is another dish that you should not miss when dining in the province.

No one mentions Batangas and not think of kapeng barako. This strong and aromatic coffee is a favorite among those who like their coffee black, but you can always sweeten it with honey or sugar. Tsokolate Eh is also another favorite Batangueño drink. Lastly, complete your Batangas experience with a shot or two of the famous local alcohol made from coconut—lambanog.

Fare: PHP 200.00++
Commuting to Batangas from Manila would be the cheaper option since bus fare is normally around PHP 200.00 one-way. You can also rent a van with rates ranging from PHP 3,000.00 to PHP 7,000.00 per day.
When going around town, you will be riding either a jeep or a tricycle. Jeep fares are relatively cheaper, starting at PHP 7.00 for the first 4 kilometers of the journey. A tricycle ride, on the other hand, starts at PHP 20.00.

Food: PHP 100.00 to PHP 500.00
With fast food chains available as well as restaurants and eateries serving delightful dishes, you can already enjoy a full meal for only PHP 100.00. But even if you dine at restaurants, spending about PHP 200.00 to PHP 300.00 per person should be good enough.

Shopping: PHP 50 to PHP 300.00
Souvenir items and delectable treats are widely available in Batangas. Sweets like panutsa, suman, or even macapuno or pastillas candies are affordable and can be bought for as low as PHP 50.00 a pack. For souvenir shirts, the price could be anywhere from PHP 200.00 to PHP 300.00, depending on the design and on the quality of the fabric used.

Accommodations: PHP 1,200.00 to PHP 5,500.00
There are numerous resorts and hotels available in Batangas, considering its popularity among local and foreign tourists. A decent and modest room can cost you PHP 1,200.00 a night. For luxurious accommodations, some are priced at PHP 5,000.00 a night or even higher.

Activities: PHP 500.00 to PHP 2,500.00
Sight-seeing tours won’t require much except for entrance fees to the museums and other heritage sites. Swimming at the beach, on the other hand, would cost as much as PHP 500.00 per head for a day trip. Diving activities are more expensive, with some diving schools charging anywhere between PHP 800.00 to PHP 2,500.00 for about an hour’s worth of diving.

Other Fees and Taxes: PHP 20.00 to PHP 50.00
Most restaurants already include a service charge to your final food bill, so tipping is not actually necessary. But if you insist, leaving somewhere from PHP 20.00 to PHP 50.00 would be enough.

The thing with traveling to various spots in Batangas is that it requires you to spend at least a day or two per area in order to enjoy the activities that each place has to offer. It’s not easy and convenient to spend half a day swimming in Laiya before going mountain climbing in Nasugbu.

Ask yourself this: what would I like to experience in Batangas? Is it to rest and relax? Go mountain climbing? Have a culinary adventure and tour of the heritage sites? Having a specific plan will help you in coming up with a proper itinerary.

Weather
The weather in Batangas is naturally kept cool, thanks to the breeze flowing from the sea that surrounds the province. But just like any other place in the Philippines, the province also experiences dry season during December to May and wet season from June to November. The average temperature throughout the year is 28 degrees Celsius, so when planning on what to bring, go for light and breathable pieces of clothing, but make sure that the ones you’ll bring are appropriate for the activities you plan on doing. Bring a light jacket or scarf too.

Health
Some tourists may complain about diarrhea while touring. Be wary of the sanitation of the food and beverages being served to you. Tap water is not always safe to drink so it’s advisable to have bottled water with you at all times. If you run out, you can always get one in the stores scattered around the province or the resort or hotel you’re staying at.

If you need medical attention, almost all of the towns in Batangas have their own clinics and hospitals, both public and private. The cities like Lipa and Batangas City, on the other hand, have larger hospitals and are better equipped. Pharmacies are also readily available, but it is also recommended that you bring your own medicine especially for any specific health condition that you may have.

Transportation
Jeeps and tricycles are your main modes of transportation within the provinces, while taxis are very rare. Both the jeep and the tricycle are open air vehicles, so always keep a handkerchief or face mask to avoid inhaling dust or pollution.

Safety
Generally, Batangas is a safe and peaceful place to visit. However, it’s best to always be alert and vigilant. Check your belongings from time to time, especially when riding public transportation or going to places where there will be a lot of people. Be constantly aware of your surroundings.
