Every October, Bacolod celebrates Masskara Festival, an event highlighting the smiles and the resilience of Negrenses. Donning colorful smiling masks, the locals dance along the streets and hold various activities that truly get participants and spectators in the groove.

This year's MassKara Festival is extra special because it is doubles as a feast and as the celebration of Bacolod City's 80th anniversary. This is one momentous occasion you should not miss, and to plan your trip accordingly, here is the list of the festival highlights for this year:

What to See and Do in Bacolod

1. Check out Capitol Park and Lagoon.

Capitol Park and Lagoon is one of the best places to relax in the city. This park in the heart of the city is known for its man-made lagoon and grassy areas that families visit for picnics and other outdoor activities. You'll also find other establishments within the area like the provincial library, Negros Museum, and the capitol building.

2. Eat authentic chicken inasal.

Bacolod is the birthplace of this delicious dish so it would be a crime not to at least have a taste. With so many inasal restaurants in town, it's pretty hard to choose which one serves the best. However, some of the places we recommend are Manokan Country, Bacolod Chicken House, and Masskara Chicken Inasal.

3. Pay San Sebastian Cathedral a visit.

Not just a popular landmark for devout Catholics, the Spanish colonial church is also an architectural marvel. Established in the year 1876, it is designed in the Baroque style of architecture and features massive pillars and some of the coral brick walls from its original foundation.

4. Take a side trip to The Ruins.

Though The Ruins is often associated with Bacolod, it is actually located in the nearby city of Talisay. One of the most beautiful and well-kept ruins you will ever see, the foundation of the mansion built by Don Mariano Ledesma for his wife in the 1920s glows ever so beautifully when hit by the rays of the setting sun. Best time for a visit is definitely during dusk.

5. Go beach bumming at Lakawon Island.

Just over an hour away from Bacolod is a magnificent island with clear, blue waters and white sandy shores. Located in the city of Cadiz, Lakawon Island is a beach resort giving you a dose of sun, sand, and sea. Here you can relax and have an adventure. Featuring kitesurfing activities and a floating bar touted as the largest in Asia, fun is in store for you at this paradise.
