San Juan, La Union may be well-known as the Surfing Capital of the North but aside from surfing, there are plenty of other reasons why you should visit—or revisit—this vacation hotspot. One of them is Magellan’s Restaurant and Lounge, a Portuguese restaurant that offers hearty servings of mouth-watering dishes that will surely satisfy your craving for a healthy treat.

The Name

Established in December 2016, Magellan’s Restaurant and Lounge is owned by Binibining Pilipinas Young International 1970 Ms. Cita Avecilla-Roman. Inspired by her travels in Europe, she thought about putting up a business in her hometown of San Juan, La Union. On her European trips, she was able to visit Ericeira, a famous surfing town in Portugal, and there she fell in love with its extraordinary cuisine. Having been inspired with her trip, she wanted to share Ericeira's gastronomical delights to La Union, a place where the waves thrive as well.

In keeping with the Portuguese theme, Ms. Avecilla-Roman decided to name her restaurant after Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer popular in Philippine history for sailing to the Philippines on his quest to discover the Spice Islands. With the authentic Portuguese dishes that it serves and Ms. Avecilla-Roman’s vision to introduce extraordinary cuisines to every Filipino’s table, the restaurant's name makes for a good fit.

With the help of her friends, Ms. Avecilla-Roman eventually was able to build a menu that consists of authentic Portuguese dishes crafted by the restaurant's head chef who hails from Macau.

The Menu

Magellan’s Restaurant and Lounge offers various food selections from main dishes and meals for sharing down to desserts. You may also cap off your food trip with some shishas and cocktails at their bar. Here are some of their best-sellers:

Food for the Health

Ms. Cita Avecilla-Roman believes that serving healthy food should be your top priority as a restaurateur. “It’s (about) what you can give your customer, instead what you can get from them,” she said. “I don’t encourage anyone to eat pork. I’m more on the healthy side.” Magellan's is proudly a pork-free establishment but it makes up for it by serving an array of healthy dishes in hearty servings to La Union visitors and locals. With the combination of its healthy dishes and its relaxing ambiance, Magellan's will absolutely complete your La Union escapade.
