It’s that time of the year again when everything is all about school pride. The 79th season of the University Athletics Association of the Philippines, or UAAP, was officially opened on September 3, 2016, with the University of Santo Tomas serving as this year’s host.

The different sporting events held during the UAAP season aims to promote camaraderie amongst students and sportsmanship with the athletes themselves. And while the UAAP has its share of winners and losers every year, we say that no win is rightly celebrated and no loss is properly consoled without great food!

For the first part of this series, let’s look at the different dining spots in Diliman, Katipunan, and Taft, where you’ll find some of the UAAP schools. Check them out for great places where you can celebrate your school’s victories and deal with the heartbreaking losses as well.

The University of the Philippines was established in 1908 and is often referred to as the top university in the Philippines. UP has 15 campuses across the country but the one in Diliman is its flagship campus and seat of administration.

Diliman is peppered with so many foodie hotspots that one school year is not enough to dine in all of them. But you’re not a diehard fan of the Maroons if you haven’t tried The Chocolate Kiss Café. It’s been around since 1997 and has been a favorite place for students, families, and friends. This cafe located in the UP Bahay ng Alumni is known for their lovely cakes. Their menu also has Filipino and international dishes that will surely tickle your palate.

The Chocolate Kiss Café
  • G/F Ang Bahay ng Alumni, R. Magsaysa St., Diliman, Quezon City
  • Open from Monday to Sunday, 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM
  • Budget: PHP 1,000.00 for two persons

Another cool dining spot in Diliman is The Snack Shack, which opened only in 2012 but has already gained quite a following—try one of their mouthwatering and pocket-friendly burgers and you’ll understand why. Have you ever had a quarter pounder with cheese for only PHP 80.00? How about a serving of bacon and fries for only PHP 60.00? All these and more are available at this burger joint located at Roces corner Laurel Street in UP Campus.

The Snack Shack
  • AREA 2, Roces corner Laurel Street, UP Campus, Diliman, Quezon City
  • Open from Monday to Saturday, 12:00 PM to 9:30 PM; and Sunday, 12:00 PM to 8:30 PM
  • Budget: PHP 200.00 for two persons

Some of the other must-try places in the UP area are Rodic’s Diner, Mang Larry’s Isawan, McDok’s Sizzling, and Mokja.

Katipunan these days is synonymous with blue and white. Ateneo de Manila Unversity, the country’s premier Jesuit University that was established in 1859, has been one of the most popular establishments along Katipunan since 1952.

Just like Diliman, the entire stretch of Katipunan Avenue is dotted with many restaurants, giving students, alumni, residents, and visitors a variety of food choices. Ken Afford is a certified must-try when you’re in the area. Their Sisig ala Domeng is a crowd favorite and costs only PHP 145.00! They have other Filipino favorites as well like pork barbecue, lechon kawali, beef tenderloin salpicao, and camaron rebosado to name a few. And true to its punny name, the dishes at Ken Afford are definitely affordable.

Ken Afford
  • B. Gonzales Street, Loyola Heights, Quezon City
  • Open from Monday to Sunday, 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM
  • Budget: PHP 400.00 for two persons

Xocolat is another favorite dining spot located not too far away from Ken Afford. The restaurant aims to offer hot chocolate as an alternative to coffee. The restaurant is chic and homey since it is a remodeled old home. While their menu boasts various sweet dishes and drinks made primarily with chocolate, they also have other food items on the menu like brunch selections, chef’s specials, paninis, pastas, and salads.

  • B. Gonzales Street, Loyola Heights, Quezon City
  • Open from Monday to Friday, from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM
  • Budget: PHP 600.00 for two persons

Other dining places to check out in Katipunan include Gino’s Brick Oven Pizza, Sweet Inspirations, and Flaming Wings.

Taft in Manila is home to two UAAP schools: Adamson University and De La Salle University. Adamson has been a member school of the UAAP since 1970, while De La Salle joined in 1986. The Adamson team is called Soaring Falcons, while the Lasallians are known as Green Archers.

Zark’s Burger is one of the proponents of the burger revolution in the country. It started out as a hole-in the-wall in 2009 and has come a long way as seen in its 24 branches nationwide. The first branch happens to be in Taft near De La Salle, but they also have one in SM Manila near Adamson. The burgers at Zark’s are huge and freshly made—just the absolute comfort food after all the cheering and screaming to support your school.

Zark’s Burger
  • 2/F SM Manila, Ermita, Manila
  • Open from Sunday to Thursday, 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM; and from Friday to Saturday, 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM
  • Budget: PHP 300.00 for two persons

Another favorite place for some satisfying grub in Taft is 8065 Bagnet. As the name suggests, they specialize in dishes made from the sinful but simply irresistible bagnet. At 8065 Bagnet you can enjoy the beloved crispy pork belly in different ways: original flavor, curry version, binagoongan, and even sinigang. Best of all, the items on their menu are priced no more than PHP 200.00!
