About Shooting in Philippines

You may find this hard to admit, but at least once in your life, you fantasized about being able to shoot a gun. It does not mean you condone violence, but with how gunslingers have been portrayed in films, TV shows, books, and other forms of media, we’ve all probably wondered what it’s like to be James Bond or Lara Croft.

It could be the reason why games, where players can use toy or virtual guns have become popular over the years. Video games like Counterstrike, Call of Duty, Halo, Battlefield, and many more have attracted numerous players who crave for some action. Meanwhile, there are paintball and laser tag centers all over the country that allow participants to team up with friends and shoot each other in a make-believe warzone.

Jump into the action

In laser tag, you and your friends use laser guns with infrared beams while wearing vests with sensors. If an infrared beam hits a sensor on the vest, it will indicate that the target has been hit. The goal, of course, is to eliminate your opponents by connecting with as shots as you can. There are also various types of matches to be played in laser tag aside from the conventional deathmatch like Capture the Flag, Protect the VIP, Elimination, and many more. Laser tag arenas are dark and come in various dimensions and features that aid in the objectives of the different game types.

Meanwhile, paintball is more intense as it resembles a real-life combat situation more. The players are armed with guns or paintball markers that shoot out small spherical capsules with paint that break upon impact, leaving stains or marks on the target. Participants are also required to be in full gear, which consists of masks and elbow and knee pads. Wearing fatigues is encouraged so you can blend in with the environment. Speaking of environment, paintball is played in grassy arenas or in jungle-like settings, where players can hide behind trees and rocks. Some also have structures like abandoned houses, which can be used as outposts.

The place for the real thing

Of course, the actual gun means serious business. It is a weapon that only authorize personnel can legally use like people in law enforcement, the military, and security; professional athletes; licensed hunters; and many more. If you want to experience shooting a real firearm, your best bet would be the shooting ranges around the country.

Visiting a shooting range can be intimidating but do know that the operators are knowledgeable in handling novice shooters. Just visit their establishment, inquire about their services, and they will be more than happy to accommodate you. There are offerings for guests and members, with the latter getting the cheaper deals. For beginners, the service usually comes with the firearm rental of your choice, ammunition, target board, protective eyewear, earmuffs, and some basic lessons.

Show me the guns

When visiting a shooting range, you will be presented with different types of light firearms that you can use. First-timers have to learn how to handle a pistol first before trying out the longer guns. For handguns, you can expect to see a Glock pistol, which is said to be one of the bestselling firearms in the world. It is lightweight, easy to use, and ideal for those who will be holding a gun for the first time. Another is the Beretta, which is longer and heavier than the Glock. A popular gun as well, it is easy to use and is perfect for those who can handle a bit more weight in their handgun. Both firearms are loaded with 9mm ammunition, known as the most popular type of round for pistols and submachineguns.

Another handgun that is available in firing ranges is the revolver. It main characteristic is the revolving set of chambers in the middle where you load the bullets. Revolvers come in different lengths, and all make use of the .38 cartridge.

Once you have learned to handle a handgun properly, it wouldn’t hurt to try the longer firearms like a shotgun. Also known as a scattergun, it comes in different types, but the most common is the single-barreled pump-action. When you fire a shotgun, the shot pellets spread out, which increases the chances of hitting a target, even for novice shooters. This firearm is also popular among hunters.

Another gun is the M16, which has been widely used by the US and Philippine militaries. This long rifle has a rate of fire of 40 to 60 rounds per minute when semiautomatic. If you want to experience what it’s like to use an automatic firearm, it would be great to have your first try with the M16.

Gun safety

When handling a real gun, you will be briefed with the dos and don’ts at a firing range. But before heading out, it would be wise to read some of them in advance so that you learn the rules by heart.

First, when it comes to guns, the first thing that experts will remind you is to treat it as if it’s always loaded. That means you should not play with it, nor point it anywhere, even if you are certain that there is no bullet in the chamber. There are just too many freak accidents that involve guns to support this rule.

Second, keep your finger away from the trigger until you are ready to fire. When holding it, always rest your index finger on the frame. You are only allowed to slide your finger onto the trigger when you are aiming at your target.

Thirdly, before shooting, be aware of your target, including the things behind it. Bullets can go through almost anything, and it will most likely hit another object aside from your target itself.

Fourth, if you own a gun, have it checked regularly. Guns are known to malfunction and are very much capable of hurting someone if not inspected properly.

These are just a few of the many rules that you need to remember if you are interested in using a gun or owning one. Prioritize safety and listen to your instructors at all times if you want shooting to be a rewarding activity that will keep you hooked.
